CLAYTON 鈥 St. 不良研究所导航网址 County Executive Sam Page weathered some pointed remarks Tuesday from County Council members about a state legislator's contention that Page offered her a job in the hope she would drop out of a council race.
"The sleaze factor made me feel like I needed to take a shower," said Councilman Dennis Hancock, R-5th District. "If it isn't a crime, then it should be."
The exchange at Tuesday's council meeting was prompted by a recent story in the Post-Dispatch.
State Rep. Gretchen Bangert, D-Florissant, told the newspaper that Page on three听separate occasions told her of jobs she could have in his administration if she would refrain from running in the Aug. 6 Democratic primary against former Creve Coeur Council member Nicole Greer.

Bangert declined the offer each time and remains in the race.
In his criticism Tuesday, Hancock said the county's budget shortages and "already strained resources is not a concern if he gets the right person on the council."听
Or "maybe this is the job creation program (Page) talked about earlier in the year," Hancock said.
Bangert听said the first offer she received from Page came in November at his office in Clayton, at which time he mentioned a job in the auditor's office.
The pair met again in December, when Bangert said Page repeated his offer of a job, this time either with the auditor or the recorder of deeds.
Bangert said she declined a county job on both occasions and considered the issue to be moot 鈥 until Page called her on May 11 for a third discussion.
She said this third attempt made her feel "uneasy," so she recorded the conversation.
During the call, Page frames his efforts as a form of party unity 鈥 eliminating the need for Bangert and Greer to oppose each other in the Democratic primary.
He goes on to tell Bangert听"there鈥檚 lots of opportunities in county government for talented folks鈥 and continues on to say, "You could do a lot for us in a position of responsibility in county government."
Page told Bangert that he also was having similar conversations with Greer.
Greer has declined several opportunities to comment.
The race in the 2nd District, which covers northwest St. 不良研究所导航网址 County, is especially crucial to Page. Outgoing council member Kelli Dunaway, along with fellow Democrat Lisa Clancy, have been Page's two staunchest supporters on the council.
Councilman Mark Harder, D-7th District, also took aim at Page on Tuesday. "Last time I checked the County Charter, the auditor is governed by this council," he said.
After the meeting, Page told a reporter he simply wanted to avoid a primary fight between Democrats.
"There is not a job offer," he said. "We're going to have an election."
